Dark colours are having a moment, and a deep green living room looks fantastic when it’s done properly. It’s also less forgiving than magnolia: every patch, roller mark and wobbly cut-in line shows. This job was the whole room: walls, ceiling and coving, plus the built-in alcove cupboards and shelves.

Protecting the room

Furniture moved and covered, floors sheeted. It’s a lived-in room, so everything gets protected properly before a brush comes out.

Walls, ceiling and coving

White ceiling and coving, deep green walls. With a colour this strong, the cutting-in line between wall and coving is what makes or breaks the finish, so it gets done by hand, slowly.

The alcove units

The built-in cupboards and shelves were painted in a softer sage green to sit against the darker walls, with the oak tops and shelves left natural.

What it costs

I charge £40 an hour with no call-out fee. Decorating time depends on the size of the room, the prep needed and how many coats the colour takes, so send me a photo and I’ll give you an idea before you book.
